McLaren’s Refreshing Winds at CMU – Part 5

Brian McLaren’s fifth and last session was the conclusion to his Naked Spirituality series at the Refreshing Winds conference at CMU. (1) At this point, the following ‘end notes and commentary’ section beneath this final post of a five part review may sound weary, short, sarcastic and lacking in patience. If perceived as so, it is for good reason.

McLaren began this final session by talking about cleaning up the damage and cramming life into artificial constructs, cultic and bad faith organizations, and inviting people back into eternal stage one as long as they submit and obey and follow orders. Certain denominations, he said, specialize in certain stages and if you are not in one of those stages they can’t help you. (2)

We need more stage four leaders who start thinking how they can more effectively live with stage four leaders. McLaren wishes there were more ‘fours’ around that can speak the message of simplicity, as an open ended cylinder, not a closed tube, but able to speak in simple ways. (3) Like Paul, who became all things to all people.

In this tough zone, how can we minister to people at these different places? Jesus is the master teacher, being able to meet people where they are but able to bring them farther along in the journey. He gives simple and clear commands for people in each zone. He was inviting people to question and doubt certainties (how faith could continue with no temple, it’s not what people eat that defile a man, etc.). (4)

Disciples are not ‘know it alls’ but life long learners. Think about rings on a tree, the inner core, and the new growth which doesn’t replace the old growth, it embraces it and expands it. At the fourth stage, there is a long way to go, and you have not arrived. Going to a retreat or conference might be a temporary stage four even if it’s not your state yet – learn the practices that develop stage four as your normal way of living. (5)

When Jesus said ‘Eat my flesh,’ McLaren said this means metaphorically and figuratively; spirit, not flesh, but what Jesus meant was – what I’m giving you is myself, me, “the body of Christ.” I wonder if it would be better, added McLaren, to translate it: the embodiment of Christ, “when we take the flesh of Christ into us, we’re saying in a sense that food is nourishing us so that we will come to understand our flesh as the enfleshment if Christ, the on going incarnation, the ongoing embodiment of Christ. Christ pouring His spirit into us so that now we carry the spirit of Jesus in our bodies the way that that physical body carried the spirit of Jesus in Gallilee and Jerusalem and in Judea.” (6)

In the season of simplicity God feeds us with clear easy answers, then when we’ve gotten used to that God gives us easy steps of know how and practice, then when we come into the season of Perplexity, God gives us questions and paradoxes that our old categories couldn’t handle, God’s way of nourishing us to help us grow and expand. In that stage of harmony (7) God gives us things too wonderful for words, and we receive in the rest of silence and beholding, surrender, releasing, agreeing, in our yes to God.

Then McLaren asked; “Can the earth really be liberated from the destructive framing story that drives it? Is Jesus’ healing and transforming framing story really powerful enough to save the world?” The simple answer, he said, is that nobody knows. (8)

But he said that his friend Jim Wallis says, there’s only one hope: we’re going to have to change the wind. (9) “Changing the wind” would mean changing public opinion, which requires changing the vision of what is both possible and desirable, which ultimately means changing our ‘framing story.’ In other words, changing the wind means doubting, rejecting, and defecting from our old framing stories, and instead, discovering and adopting – in a word, believing – a new framing story. (10) As McLaren has been preaching for some time already, everything must change.

In conclusion, it is the opinion of the olives that these so called ‘Refreshing Winds‘ that blew into CMU this February should have been more truthfully called the ‘Stench of Death Drafts.’ If it’s true that a cross wind moves horizontally, while a draft moves vertically, this would be considered a ‘downdraft.’ As any trained meteorologist will tell you, downbursts can cause extensive localized damage, similar to that caused by tornadoes. This is exactly what we are seeing happen in the church as men like McLaren and his good friends blow in to speak here and there, leaving heaps of debris behind them with their messy doubt filled books, philosophies and myths. Jesus said that the hypocrites of His day knew how to discern the weather, but not discern the signs of the times (Matthew 16). What about you, reader?

It has not been easy to listen to hours of lies and craftiness in an effort to attempt to shine the light of truth into this ominous storm pressure system that is upon us. This small attempt to turn back the tide has been prayerfully done in hopes that even one who reads here will have their eyes opened and will be able to discern the pure and simple truth from gross camouflaged error. May God rescue the faithful from even greater delusion that is even now pressing at the door.

Take heed!

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” Ephesians 4:14

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:3,4

(2) More demeaning arrogant propaganda, presenting the myth as fact while destroying the simple truths of the gospel.

(3) How characteristically condescending of him.

(4) No. He was telling them that He was the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. This is another indication of McLaren’s ignorance of scripture.

(5) Would these practices to further develop this supposedly enlightened stage by any chance be the mystical eastern practices and the contemplative spiritual disciplines of the ‘early church’ (i.e. Roman Catholic monks and Desert Fathers) which have recently been revamped and passed off as ‘Christian’?

(6) It’s not about our flesh, it’s about Jesus taking on our sin and reconciling us back to the Father, so we can be empowered to die to our flesh and daily walk in the resurrection power of His Holy Spirit to glorify His Name and spread the good news.

(7) So far, harmony according to McLaren appears to mean being one with the world’s thinking systems and philosophies, New Age thought, Jesus/Buddha naked spirituality, and universalism. This is the world’s inter-religious harmony, not the unity in Jesus Christ.

(8) Wrong. Those who have read to the end of The Book and believe know. Revelation 11:15

(9) Jim Wallis? Of this wind, McLaren is referring to the social gospel and dominionism.

  1. Thankyou for doing the work; I could not have stomached this, but am grateful that you managed.
The new age buzz words ‘life long learning’ immediately bring to mind “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”. How sad to always live in the ‘cloud of unknowing’, to always wander about in the fog when here in North America we so readily have available the unchanging Word of God to us. (We had better hide that in our hearts while we still have access; by the way, the (uncopyrighted unadulterated) King James Authorized has been documented to be the most easily memorized Bible we have).

Nothing McLaren and company have to say, cannot be countered by God’s Word.
An MCC rep showed up at our church one day, and left a Refreshing Winds invite; my comment then, it’s an ill wind. Your description as the stench of death is the better diagnosis.

To those whose hearts are not yet so hardened beyond help, where the conscience is not yet seared with the hot iron, if your church is leading you astray and you suspect it, run for your very lives: (Note: for those not familiar with old English, ‘he who now letteth’ refers to the Holy Spirit who indwells believers, restraining evil. Evil is not yet allowed to flourish to the degree it will be allowed after the Rapture, when genuine born again believers are removed to be with the Lord; during that time frame of 7 years God will deal with unbelievers and turn His attention once again to the nation Israel, fulfilling the promises He has made to them.)
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: [Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12
Observe that they received not the love of the truth…they had heard it, but loved it not. The ’emergents’ like so many others can tell you enough about the Rapture for instance, to mock it. If we insist on lies, God will eventually assist us into the delusion we have sought. Ask Pharoah.

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” “Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:1,2 That is lifelong learning God can bless.

Note that we are clearly influenced for good or evil and known by the company we keep. How much more documentation is needed before we are willing to acknowledge sheep may not frolic with wolves?

In virtually every aspect of life today, the signs of the return of the Lord are showing. In our hearts, it is quite likely that we know something big is about to transpire.

Did you hear the screams of the people in Japan as the waves came and took them away? Only a few clips actually included the audio. It was heartwrenching.
Revelation 16 says, “And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God…”
Now, that passage refers to after Rapture, Tribulation period events. So that means, Japan is only a small picture of what lies ahead.

“As we see “upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth…” Luke21:25,6, there is only one sane thing to do, and that is to repent and believe the gospel. All else is madness. And as we believe, we must ask the Lord to give us heart for the lost: “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men…”2Cr 5:11.

A good chunk of the blame as to the apostasy amongst Mennonites may well have its origins in a failure to be grounded in sound Biblical eschatology.

Scripture clearly teaches three divisions of mankind: “Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God,” (the church is all born again believers be they of Jewish or Gentile extraction, 1 Cr 10:32). When we study Scripture, we must note to which of these segments of mankind the passage pertains. If Scripture is not seen from this perspective, we fail to see God’s plan for the ages. If we do not get the bird’s eye view, we wander about in the fog, with nothing making sense. The only view of Scripture that makes sense, is as literal a vew as possible, letting Scripture interpret Scripture, taken from an unadulterated text (hints: wouldn’t we have a poor excuse for a devil if he hadn’t managed to tamper with the text? follow the money… copyright? is the ‘bible’ you are reading, some man’s spin on what God said, maybe to suit the interpreter’s own lifestyle? or one that downplays the Son of God? OR is the Bible you are reading a tried and true TRANSLATION of the words the Lord actually inspired men to write? You do not want an interpretation of ideas (dynamic equivalency); what you want is what God said, translated word for word.) For instance, in the previously quoted 2 Thess. 12 passage, ‘that they all might be damned”, ‘judged’ is used in some versions to replace the Authorized (KJV) “damned.” Now that puts a whole new spin on things. Suddenly, if ‘judged’ is then used as it is used today (judgment can result in a guilty or not guilty verdict), there may be hope where there is no hope. “Billy Graham was an important part of the puzzle when it came to the introduction of new and improved (not) Bible ‘versions.’ And which Mennonite didn’t fall at Graham’s feet. Shallow, shallow. Ecumenical. All (such) roads lead to Rome. On such foundations we cannot stand.

The one thing that McLaren has right, everything MUST change, but not like he intends: “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord…” Acts 3:19. Now that is refreshing.
